About the business

Care Transport Services is a contractor to the Assisted School Transport Program. We provide safe and comfortable transport for students with special needs to and from school. We also provide transport to NDIS participants and War Veterans (DVA transport). 


About the role

We are looking for drivers in the greater Sydney area.


Drivers are entrusted with the safe transport of students to and from school in the morning and afternoons. Each school run is different and will either be in a sedan, wagon, people mover, or a minibus.


Drivers must:

  • have a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) number
  • possess English language skills sufficient for the effective delivery of ASTP services
  • receive clearance from the ASTP before commencing work
  • are medically fit to hold a driver licence
  • maintain a good driving record
  • carry driver identification at all times
  • follow their assigned run card(s)
  • meet a high standard of professionalism
  • work collaboratively with Assisted Travel Support Officers (ATSO) to manage students on transport.

CAPABILITY/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING 

To be considered for these position drivers will have the following: 


  •  Current driver’s license, MR or higher licence where needed 
  •  Good driving history and record 
  •  To be responsible and honest 
  •  A good sense of direction 
  •  Proof of Australian residency/full working rights within Australia 
  •  Minimum 2-year bus, coach or heavy vehicle driving experience 
  •  Minimum 3 years full license for sedan and wagons 
  •  Current Industry Drivers Authority (Essential) 
  •  Fantastic communication skills 
  •  Excellent customer service and ability to work with people from a range of backgrounds 
  •  A positive and excellent work ethic 
  •  Strong commitment to safety and compliance 
  •  Current and contactable references for the last 2 years of work 
  •  Previous experience in a similar role 
  •  Ensure the safety of self, passengers and vehicle at all times 
  •  Performing pre and post departure checks

Mandatory Training


Upon receipt of the WWCC number, EOI applicants will need to proceed with the free online anaphylaxis e-training provided by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. This online course is essential for all NSW Department of Education employees working with children.After completing the course the certificate can be printed and attached to the EOI application. The certificate does not need to be signed by a supervisor.To help ATSOs in their role, ASTP facilitates training in:


  • child protection
  • code of conduct
  • anaphylaxis
  • e-Emergency care
  • cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)


Schools also provide individual training and briefings on the specific travel support needs of students on transport.ATSOs are expected to participate in training in order to improve their skills. ATSOs must be 18 years old, physically able, have good communication skills, be respectful and understanding of students with disability, and be able to work collaboratively with others.


Application process


The EOI application process can take several weeks given the various checks that are undertaken. It is essential that all information is fully completed.ASTP will formally advise applicants if they have been successful and provide information on whether they will be on a relief list or commencing work on a transport run. Identification cards will also be issued.

General Description

 

Assists with the development, planning, implementation and monitoring of school bus routes and the safe transportation of children to and from school and school activities within established regulations and guidelines; collects and prepares monthly reports on students, vehicles, drivers, mileage, programs and others, as needed.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists with establishing and monitoring runs, including special      programs; adjusts routes as necessary during the school year; field tests      schedules and routes; determines mileage of routes; communicates all driver      activities, includes using appropriate protocol for reporting accidents/incidents      and maintain compliance;
  • Recommends drivers to routes; receives calls from drivers and      parents; secures substitutes; allocates resources as directed; works with      other departments, school officials and staff to assist with identifying      and correcting problems;
  • Uses the routing and mapping software to answer questions and to      plan and adjust school bus routes and stops; maintains transportation      routes on the web site;
  • Maintains records of routes, drivers, absences, mileage, daily      reports, etc.; prepares reports as necessary; assists supervisor with      filing and preparing reports, posting payroll and distributing      information;
  • Performs the duties of driver of the run and office manager, when      necessary;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Qualifications

Working knowledge of transportation planning, scheduling and operations, local geography and office procedures; safe and defensive driving methods and first aid procedures including CPR. Some knowledge of personnel policies, including confidentiality; state and local school bus operation laws and regulations. Working skill in the use of a personal computer, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, mapping and routing, and web-based route posting; accident protocol and reporting procedures. Demonstrated ability to operate fleet of vehicle safely and punctually in all weather conditions; to work effectively with drivers, children, parents and staff. Demonstrated ability to work under stressful conditions or emergencies and to plan, organize and work independently; to assist with training others. Demonstrated ability to analyse data, establish efficient routes and identify and correct problems.


Requirements

Valid full Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with our Policy, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned owner or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy. 


First aid and CPR courses; Defensive Driving Course. Meets physical qualifications for school bus drivers. Applicants considered for employment must successfully complete the following background investigations/tests:
